   There are 3 Main Keys:

      Video Modeling

       Skill Builder Stories,

       Picture Pack Images

Visuals improve the quality learning environments, maximize successful social outcomes, and support a more complete involvement in activities. The difficulty lays in having the right visual at the right time.

Spectrum Keys took this on as a challenge.

The research behind video modeling is very strong- and several companies produce quality DVD’s.  We think those DVD’s are wonderful (and salute the folks over at those companies who are working just as hard as we are)...  But the problem is- most people don’t walk around with VCR’s.

They do however walk around with phones… phones that can play videos. And, it’s rare to find a home or classroom that does not have a computer.  Heck, even game boxes can stream video from the internet these days…. Why Not Create Targeted Videos? Short segments that target a specific skill, activity, or interaction?  And so we did.

Every video is paired with a story using the same images. This of course brought on reflections of   stories… and schedules... and charts… and posters… and directions….   Using visuals to introduce new activities or rules is effective.  It is also terribly time consuming… spending an hour to create visuals for an activity that will last an hour might make sense … for one hour. … however there are 168 hours in a week….

Another Challenge for the Spectrum Keys Team! Hmm… how about a central location where people could find what they needed and simply hit print… it should take less than a minute.  So we created Skill Builder Stories- hundreds of stories, charts, poster etc that can be instantly downloaded.

But the real genius (if we do say so ourselves) was in realizing that our members themselves had their own private collections of visuals that they have created for their own unique needs. Well gee, how about if we pay our members to share these with our other members….?  Sounds like a plan!

Using images from the stories supports independence and allows for cue reminders.  It is the basic building block. Spectrum Keys mission is to provide these building blocks. This was the Third Challenge!

If our members needed images- why not provide a multitude of options?  So the team came together with their camera and took on assignments. It was probably not a good idea to send a man to take pictures at a playground without sending a child along with him… but otherwise it worked out well.  Spectrum Keys offers 1800+ images grouped into Picture Packs.

The final challenge was the most difficult. Creating a highly- interactive, user- friendly website. Membership needed to be affordable (between $10 and $20 a month seemed fair), and we needed to reach into the autism community to fully serve your needs. We are there.
